Celebrity couple Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara are subject to executively produce a new documentary titled The End of Medicine.

The film, which is being directed by BAFTA-winning director Alex Lockwood and produced by acclaimed filmmaker Keegan Kuhn, explores ‘the connection between animal agriculture, environmental destruction and the emergence of zoonotic diseases’.

It features interviews with some of the world’s leading scientists ‘whose research and testimonies conclude that the public health emergency we are presently facing was inevitable and is far from over’.

‘The science is irrefutable’

In a joint statement sent to Plant Based News, Phoenix and Mara said: We hope that The End Of Medicine is an eye-opening call to action and ignites a spark of willingness to change our habits.

“The science is irrefutable. Modern animal agriculture will continue to make us sick if we don’t radically change our patterns of consumption.”

‘Emerging threats’

“Collectively, we are becoming increasingly aware of the threat that zoonotic diseases pose, but our governments and the mainstream media predominantly focus on fire fighting rather than prevention,” Lockwood added.

“With this film, we hope to shine a light on the extent to which animal agriculture and environmental destruction contribute to these emerging threats.

“We also hope to lift the veil on how issues of racial injustice and disease are often intrinsically linked.”

The film’s production is set to finish by the end of 2020
